Jean May Sasanqua. 'Jean May' has a semi-double to double, soft shell pink flower resembling 'Cotton Candy' with an upright spreading habit. This color is so pleasing that it can be mixed with almost any other color and will not clash, even a red brick wall for a background. The petals may transition to a slightly deeper pink closer to the middle; otherwise, it is very difficult to distinguish it from 'Cotton Candy'. Its form may be more spreading and dense than 'Cotton Candy' also. The flowers are almost completely double, but it will also have many semi-double flowers with very few if any stamens showing. As with all Camellias, plant shallow, and even though one will often read "acid loving", I still add plenty of lime with my backfill, as well as every couple of years also top dress with it, and my plants thrive. I have a dear cousin who told us that she has some Camellias that haven't flowered in over 40 years. So my brother limed her whole yard, especially the Camellias. The next year she called me so excited because all of her Camellias were flowering.
