Due to the recent discovery of the spotted lanternfly in South Carolina, California has restricted the shipment of plants from SC as well as 15 other states in which the spotted lanternfly had already been found. It was found over 100 miles from Nurseries Caroliniana, but the whole state has been put under quarantine until a treatment protocol can be worked out to resume shipments to California. Authorities hope that this can be accomplished by the end of the month.

This is a semi-tropical plant native to Mexico down through Central America and Caribbean Islands, but here in zone 8 and it is in the Verbena family, Verbenaceae. Here in zone 8 is had proven dependably ground hardy if one mulches its base. This spectacular selection was found by plantsman Barry Yinger at a small village plant fair in Japan. It is the custom in many towns to have plant "festivals" a couple times a year where growers and gardeners alike bring plants and many other artifacts to sell. The main street in town will be shut down for a day or two for the festival. This was offered by a homeowner where they had found it as a sport. There are many small consignment nurseries that offer spaces for locals to sell their plants. I have found some of my best "finds" at these places. This selection has a picoteed white margin around a violet flowers. Really nice. Best in full sun. If you are in an area too cold to over-winter it outside, just plant it in a pot and move it in for the winter. It will survive in some of the poorest soils.
