Due to the recent discovery of the spotted lanternfly in South Carolina, California has restricted the shipment of plants from SC as well as 15 other states in which the spotted lanternfly had already been found. It was found over 100 miles from Nurseries Caroliniana, but the whole state has been put under quarantine until a treatment protocol can be worked out to resume shipments to California. Authorities hope that this can be accomplished by the end of the month.

Chason's Gift Chinese Fir. A selection made at Johnson's Nursery, Willard, NC, with glossy dark green needles and a more compact conical form than the species. Its best attribute is that it does not languish around in the shrub form for several years, but almost immediately sends up a central leader. This is the best new introduction that I have seen with this species in my lifetime. Native to China, this species can reach 150' in its native habitat, but here in cultivation 40' is considered quite large. It has the undesirable attribute of dropping 3-4 year old "branchlets" which turn brown and fall under the tree. So the most desirable way to grow this specimen is to allow its branches to grow all the way to the ground, thus covering up the fallen debris.
