Due to the recent discovery of the spotted lanternfly in South Carolina, California has restricted the shipment of plants from SC as well as 15 other states in which the spotted lanternfly had already been found. It was found over 100 miles from Nurseries Caroliniana, but the whole state has been put under quarantine until a treatment protocol can be worked out to resume shipments to California. Authorities hope that this can be accomplished by the end of the month.

Clemson Hardy Bottlebrush. When I was a student at Clemson University, I had noticed this plant growing at a home in downtown Clemson, SC. Since it had survived the mid-1980 freezes when temperatures were in the minus digits, Dr. John Kelly, then head of the Dept. of Horticulture got permission to propagate it. It has spreading pendulous branches with brilliant red flowers in April followed by a scattering of bloom throughout the growing season, even to Thanksgiving. Bottlebrush is one of the best drought tolerant plants that one could plant, since most are native to Australia. Part to full sun. Leaves are wider than 'Woodlander's Hardy' and not quite as prickly.
