Due to the recent discovery of the spotted lanternfly in South Carolina, California has restricted the shipment of plants from SC as well as 15 other states in which the spotted lanternfly had already been found. It was found over 100 miles from Nurseries Caroliniana, but the whole state has been put under quarantine until a treatment protocol can be worked out to resume shipments to California. Authorities hope that this can be accomplished by the end of the month.

Golden King Aucuba. Aucubas are botanically known as being "dioecious," meaning that there are separate male and female plants. This is a broad leaf variegated form with more gold than green in its foliage. Truly one of the great cultivars! It is listed as a male, but I have found some of ours with berries, so I'm beginning to wonder. When selections are in cultivation for a number of years and now flowers are observed, then it is prone to be called a male. But once a cultivar gets some age, we tend to change our minds when we see that they have a "sex change"! So maybe 'Golden King' is really 'Golden Queen.' Stand by. We use it as a good male pollinator. Flowers are easily observed in early spring where one can tell whether it is a male or a female.
