Red-flowering Cross Vine. Similar in all respects to the species, except that the leaves are slightly smaller. But the flowers are a brick-red and put on a truly spectacular show in April. There will also be a degree of sporadic flowering throughout the summer as well. The selection we grow was found by Bob McCartney of Woodlanders. He found it growing on the guy wire of a utility pole at a used car lot in Aiken, SC, just a few miles away, and took cuttings of it then. Some while back, a good plantsman must have found this one growing in the wild and moved it here. Two weeks Bob had gotten cuttings, it was bulldozed. Thankfully Bob had gotten the cuttings to preserve it. That's why we should always share our bounty. Because this genus climbs by tendrils with adhesive discs, it can climb almost any textured surface, such as a brick wall or even wood.
