Oxblood Lily. This Argentine native bulb was brought to Texas by German immigrants from Argentina in the 1850's. It is a fascinating addition to anyone's garden. It has blood red trumpet shaped flowers resembling a miniature Amaryllis on stalks of 6-12" in late summer when no foliage is present. Shortly thereafter, its narrow strap-shaped grassy leaves emerge and remain green until the next May, when they go dormant. I have seen this species flowering in dense shade or full sun. As the bulbs develop, they slowly work themselves deeper into the soil. This is one of those great fall surprises. They divide slowly to make larger clumps, which can be divided as needed.
